Kaal Bhairav is often depicted as a fierce-looking deity with a dog as his vahana (vehicle). He is also depicted holding a trident and a skull in his hands.

Legend has it that Kaal Bhairav was created by Lord Shiva to guard the city of Kashi (Varanasi) from evil forces. It is said that Kaal Bhairav once beheaded Lord Brahma, who had become arrogant and was misusing his power. To atone for his sin, Lord Brahma established a temple dedicated to Kaal Bhairav in Kashi.
